PlayStation 4 Could Well Overtake PS2 At The Top

PS4 Controller
Month after month, the PlayStation 4 has been selling way more units than any other console out there in the market, so it is no secret that Sony is leading in the current console war by a substantial margin.

It is also unsurprising that Sony believes the PS4 could do better than it has, stating recently that the console is set to grow by 8.3 percent or 20 million units by the end of the current fiscal year on March 31 next year.

That would take the lifetime sales of the fourth-gen console up to 60 million units. Since its release in November 2013, Sony has sold an average of 16 million units per year.

With the console’s current trajectory, it is on track to beating the best-selling console ever which is the PlayStation 2 that was released in 2000. In its 13-year existence, the PS2 has sold over 157 million units, which translates to an average of more than 12 million units annually.

The Sony PS2 is the best-selling console to date

However, it has to be noted that in its final years sales of the PS2 were at a minimal which explains its lower per year sales average. We’ll have a decade or so to see if the PS4 takes top spot from the PS2.

For now, 20 million sales in the next year should be easily achievable by Sony. The PS4 would get a boost from the PlayStation VR, the PS4.5, and the hard-hitting exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End which has become the fastest-selling Sony title for the PS4 at the end of its first week of release.
